Mid-month accounting dates

Maree Maxfield recently highlighted the fact that Xero is not able to handle organisations with a year-end date that does not also fall on a month-end date. So 31st March works fine - but if your business makes up its accounts to 15th March every year, you have a problem.

However, I don't think it's a problem that Xero need to solve - I believe that sometimes you have to change to…

XERO: request for contacts & invoice overhaul

Main Points

-contacts to be basis for database, not just for invoice recipients

-invoicing to be more dynamic for more precise external communication

-invoicing data to be more flexible for better business metrics

Long explanation

Xero in my opinion is not just an accounting package but it is also the nucleus of the data flow of a small business DATABASE and  has to make few changes in contacts to reflect this. As it feeds to CRM systems it… Continue

Introducing the Story Telling BeanCounter

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. But there’s a story behind the numbers. Yes, a story behind the numbers in every business. In some cases, this story is never told in its entirety. As a

business owner, you may see chapters of the story by looking at the

numbers and attempting to interpret the meaning behind the numbers

yourself. Or get someone with more experienced eyes to view and

interpret the numbers for you. But most time this turns to to be…

Anyone looking for a Xero accountant/resource?

Sorry to use this blog for selfish reasons but wondered if there were any vacancies out there for a Xero trained accountant who wants to join a forward looking Xero based practice, or as a self employed resource for a smaller practice?

Very flexible in my approach and requirements, but not in the fact that I want to be involved with people who have bought into the whole Xero ethos.

Also fully accredited with Sage, Mamut and Iris practice suite

Accounting for subscriptions

Hi guys

Wondered if any of you had come across the following and have any suggestions

I have a society that has an annual subscription, but allows its members to pay by standing order over 12 months. Therefore each month there are 100's of receipts for the same amount, which need to be allocated against the subscription invoice. Problem is that some people cancel their subs s/o and not notify the society, who need to monitor o/s amounts…

Going Boldly where few have gone before into XeroLand

For me, there are are lot of unexplored areas in Xero which only surface when you are looking to do something new and different that usually requires a workaround. So I'm off to do some exploring. I feel somewhat like Sherlock Holmes looking for clues to solving a case. In fact, this may conjure up a good visual of what I'm trying to accomplish here.

So off I go. At this point, my travels have taken me into the Fixed Assets… Continue

The coming HST in Ontario and British Columbia for Canadian Xero Users

Just wanted to get a dialogue going about the upcoming Harmonized Sales tax (HST) coming July 1, 2010 for Xero users in Canada. In particular, it applies to the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. My sense is that to accommodate this change in Xero, all that needs to happen is to create another tax item at 13%. The real concern for small business users here is understanding and applying the transition rules to your particular… Continue

Xero wins more awards!

News is just coming through from the other side of the planet (New Zealand and the ONYAs to be precise) that Xero has won three out of the four awards it was nominated for, namely “Most Outstanding Website”, “Best User Experience” and “Best Web Application”. They missed out on “Most Innovative” but, hey, this is accounting software we’re talking about.

Of course, being web-based software, this is the same stuff that we use…

Does XERO cater for different VAT methods

In Ireland you have two methods for returning sales tax

The Cash and Accruals methods

From the XERO settings it seems to be only able to choose one system or the other for everything.

however unlike nearly every other country we deal with, In Ireland

Cash basis mean – Cash for Sales and Invoices for Purchases

Accruals means – Invoices for Sales and Invoices for Purchases.

As you can imagine the cash basis of recording VAT… Continue

Is Xero really playing fair with our data?

In a post on the Xero Blog on 15th January, Mark Matt Vickers discusses Vendor Lock-In. In a previous post, I commented on the automatic upgrades nature of Saas products. Here I want to examine Mark’s Matt's claim that:

“.. if you want to stop using Xero, it’s relatively simple to get your data out in…

Compulsory ugrades or good service?

In a post on the Xero Blog today, Mark Vickers discusses how users of software (desktop or web-based) are always vulnerable to “vendor lock-in” – in essence having their data stuck in a system they now want out of.

He cites the example of FaceBook’s recent change to its privacy policy, then moves on to accounting… Continue

MYOB vs XERO

How do I rate Xero to MYOB?

I have just finished updating my books on Xero, it only took me 5 mins!! This used to take me at least TWO HOURS on MYOB and this is how the process went…

On MYOB:

First I would have to enter in all my bills and double check I had entered in all my invoices.

I would then enter any bill payments, invoice payments, spend money transactions and bank transfers from my bank statement.

THEN, I would have to go into the bank… Continue

No more Data entry

Hi Just signed up to this social networking site and I want to rave about Xero....

I have the feature that allows bank feeds automatically and this is amazing! All I have to do is press the reconcile button and its done! coded, and reconciled...my accounts are up to date on an almost daily basis. I've found that the system is brilliant for our size business and handles things brilliantly.

The biggest break through has been the integration with our project management… Continue

The Traditional Accountant says, "If it ain't broke..."

I've been providing bookkeeping and accounting services to small business for over 15 years now. I've often discussed with "accounting professionals" about utilizing online accounting applications like Xero for their small business clients. Very often, they don't see the value/benefits in offering these services to their clients. Their attitude is "if it an't broke, don't fix it". My response to these accountants (tongue in cheek) is "wake up and smell the new wave of accounting" or be left… Continue
